Examinations

An overview of the assessment process at Loyola Academy, from the office that oversees it.

Loyola Academy follows a structured evaluation system built on two components — Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) and the Semester-End Examination (SEE) — weighted 40:60 to balance ongoing engagement with a comprehensive end-of-term evaluation.

CIA is built up through weekly tests set by each department, along with assignments, seminars and viva voce, and mid-semester examinations covering theory. Two mid-semesters run within a single semester, and practical work in the laboratory is assessed as part of CIA too. Attendance and regularity also factor into the internal score.

The SEE takes the form of a comprehensive written examination at the end of the semester for every course, with most subjects carrying a practical component as well. Question papers are set by external subject experts, and answer scripts are evaluated by external examiners to keep the process independent. Supplementary examinations are held only at the end of even semesters.

The Examination Branch at Loyola Academy is committed to a testing process that is transparent, rigorous, and centred on the student — examinations exist not merely to award grades, but to genuinely measure what has been learnt and how far a student has grown.

We design assessments to go beyond rote recall, aiming instead to capture critical thinking, problem-solving and the practical application of knowledge, with every paper mapped back to clearly defined course and programme outcomes.

Guided by the Ignatian tradition of holistic, values-driven education, the Branch continues to refine how it works — through outcome-based design, continuous assessment, and the responsible use of technology — so that the system stays fair, accurate, and worthy of the students it serves.
