Understanding living systems, protecting what sustains us
A systematic understanding of living organisms, non-living things, and the relationships among them.
Environmental Science integrates the knowledge of physical, chemical and biological sciences along with the atmospheric sciences. In recent years it has emerged as an important discipline offering solutions to many environmental problems, while also opening up a variety of employment options. The College established the Department of Environmental Science in 1992.
The Department focuses on teaching the environmental issues important for the conservation of natural resources, geo-hazards, environmental degradation and biodiversity — developing expertise in water pollution management, environmental monitoring, air and noise pollution control, environmental impact assessment, climate change and environmental legislation.
To develop, nurture and empower students to their full potential to cope with environmental challenges for achieving sustainable development.
To provide every person with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values, attitudes, commitment and skills needed to protect and improve the environment.
The Department deals with relevant issues pertaining to the changing environment at global, regional and local levels. Basic laboratory equipment required to conduct research on various aspects of environmental science is available in the Department. The faculty practices novel teaching methods and assesses students on their overall development.
Expose students towards nature and let them learn and play outside to develop sensitivity, appreciation and respect for the environment.
Acquire knowledge of the environment beyond the immediate surroundings, including distant environments.
Acquire a set of values for environmental protection.
Develop skills for making discriminations in form, shape, sound, touch, habits and habitats, and to draw unbiased inferences and conclusions.
Provide an opportunity to be actively involved at all levels of environmental decision-making.
The team guiding students through the science of the environment.
Programme & specific outcomes shaping the environmental science curriculum.
Students will gain knowledge on environmental aspects and involve themselves in acquiring an able environment. Students will be sensitized towards gender issues in society and the laws enforced for their protection.
Understand the importance of environmental education, conservation of natural resources & the importance of ecosystems and biodiversity.
Understand pollution problems and apply environmental science knowledge to solid waste management and disaster management.
Apply environmental science knowledge to improve resources; evaluate and understand sustainable environmental conditions and control methods.
Identify the interactions and intersections of identities (e.g. gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality) and assess how they contribute to privilege and power dynamics across cultures, space and time.
Understand gender problems and ways of addressing them, including interactions from local to global scales, and overcoming inequalities through legislation.
Green Club — growing environmental awareness, one session at a time.
Green Club seeks to promote environmental awareness among students regarding the necessity of protecting and conserving the environment. It was founded with the goal of contributing to a cleaner and greener environment, organising a variety of events and activities that instil a responsible and proactive attitude among students towards environmental protection.
Students are very much interested in joining Green Club, which now consists of more than 100 members. The club's main objective is to engage students in environmental awareness and build a clean, green consciousness through various activities — a platform to gain knowledge about the environment.
Offline sessions began on 5th January 2022, running from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and continuing through 7th January 2022. Due to a rise in COVID-19 cases, the Government instructed educational institutions to function online; sessions shifted online from 8th January 2022, 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm, lasting until 13th January. Even in online mode, there was no compromise in the quality of the sessions, and students showed great enthusiasm in learning and participating.
